Peel back the layers.

The goal of this project was to create an animation that was as energetic and fascinating as the song that it accompanies. Onion Boy by Isaac Dunbar is a beat-driven synth-pop track that mixes with odd, yet entertaining lyrics. The animated video takes advantage of that by mixing kinetic typography with the use of fast-paced vector graphics.

The point of this animation was to tell the story of Onion Boy by interpreting the lyrics and weaving a tale through related imagery. After laboring over the storyline, the rest came easy. This video tells the narrative of a young boy (Isaac Dunbar) who is desperately trying to forget about the toxic classmate he’s in love with. Isaac’s crush, Onion Boy purposefully goes out of his way to ignore Isaac’s feelings and even though he’s dismayed, Isaac can’t stop pining after Onion Boy.

Green with…

The colors were a key aspect of portraying the tone of this video. Though the color was originally protested for seemingly giving the wrong message, green was intended to convey illness, grossness, and sourness. However, when the video reaches the bridge, the color changes to pink not only for variety and shock value but also to communicate a tone shift in Isaac’s view of the Onion Boy.
